SOMETIMES I'M SAD: ORIGINS
After a low period in Javier C. Rivera's life, he began to see a therapist. After a few sessions, she began to focus his depression into writing. She simply noted that Javier was a creative person with many talents who was already expressing his feelings in other types of projects ranging from art to music to filmmaking.
“She helped me find a new way of dealing with my feelings. It felt like I was starting a new life.”
Soon after writing the book, Javier put a call out for an illustrator and received nearly 100 responses.
“I was in awe of the number of great artists out there; Hui Min Liu’s work, however, was the most unique and befitting to this project. It’s child-like without seeming overly cute. It’s just beautiful.”
In another moment of inspiration, Javier decided he would like to create a short film as a companion to the book.
“It’s an idea I’ve had since I was a kid. I loved watching Reading Rainbow, especially during the book-reading portion. I always hoped that one of my stories would be on that show.”
When it was time to seek a voice artist for the reading of the book, Javier immediately thought of Ashley Ramirez.
“I met Ashley on a different project where she was hired as a Production Assistant. I remember talking to her on set and hearing her distinct voice. I thought it was such a shame that her voice wasn't being utilized in the arts. Of course, that was before I realized she was already an actress. It was pure luck that we met.”
When deciding on the music for the project Javier went against his original intentions.
"At first, I was planning on finding someone else to compose the music. But while I was on the phone with a friend I started playing with a riff that eventually turned into "Triste". I thought it had a melancholy sound that worked both as background music as well as standing on its own. I mixed it with Ashley's reading and it all just fit naturally."
SOMETIMES I'M SAD: SUPPORT
More than two months into the project, Javier talks about the current status and support.
"The past few months have proved to be astounding. We've accomplished a lot including Hui Min's sketches for the entire book, Ashley's book reading, music, a website, an interview, and even a demo video.
So far, everyone who hears about this project has been very supportive. We've been given some generous donations as well as encouraging words and advice. We've been very lucky with our endeavor and whether or not the book is published, it has already been a success."
