Over eighteen million Americans are depressed, as many as two million of these are adolescents. Children’s books about depression such as My Depression and When Devon Met Oz are in short supply. Sometimes I’m Sad focuses on making communication and understanding more open to both the parent and the child. It is a helping aid for parents, therapists, medical doctors and teachers. It is also available in English and Spanish.
Another vital element to this book is the DVD companion. Javier C. Rivera has produced a short film based on Sometimes I’m Sad with voice work by Ashley Ramirez, artwork by Hui Min Liu and music by Tino Ghost. The film improves the book’s goal to help guide dialogue between parent and child.
The book also opens the possibility of a series aimed at other adolescent issues such as anger, boredom and fear with titles such as Sometimes I’m Angry, Sometimes I’m Bored and Sometimes I’m Scared.
AUTHOR
Since a young age Javier C. Rivera has written poetry, music lyrics, short stories and screenplays. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Film and Video from Columbia College Chicago and a Masters in Education from Carthage College. Javier has directed film and video since 1996 and is also a founding member of film, video, and graphics company Gasoline Productions.
ILLUSTRATOR
Hui Min Liu was educated to be a landscape designer at the Tunghai University in Taiwan where she earned her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree. During her undergraduate study she learned how to appreciate the beauty of rhythm in the language of design and the harmony underneath the pattern of nature. Hui Min also earned her Master of Arts Degree from Savannah College of Art and Design. Her artwork for Sometimes I’m Sad is available for viewing in the ARTWORK page of this website.
